This wide, dark green pepper is very moderate in spice and has a subtle smoke element. It is commonly used for stuffing in the traditional Mexican dish chile rellenos. When dried, this pepper is known as chile ancho – ancho translating to ‘wide’ in Spanish.

Plant Preferences:

Pepper plants need more phosphorus than other veggies and will benefit from being watered in with a high phosphorus solution when transplanted.

When to Sow:

Sow seeds indoors about 8 weeks prior to planting out into warm weather. If possible, use a seed heat mat or other method to maintain soil temperatures of 80 to 90 degrees.

Harvest:

Harvest dark green peppers when they are at least 5 inches long. Peppers can be left on the plant to ripen to a red/brown color and a fruitier taste.
