Butternut Squash ‘Waltham’ – Cucurbita moschata
One of the most popular varieties of winter squash for good reason. Beautiful dark orange flesh is smooth textured and deliciously sweet and nutty. Large 4 to 5 pound squash with small seed cavities.
SOW seeds outdoors after danger of frost has passed or indoors about 3 to 4 weeks before planting out. Sow two seeds per location and then thin to one plant if both germinate.
HARVEST squash about 8 weeks after fruit is first set by cutting from the vine. Freshly cut squash are very delicate and require curing by being exposed to the open sun or warm temperatures with good air circulation for about a week.
TIPS Protect young plants from pests with floating row covers. Properly cured squash can be stored for several months in a cool dark pantry or root cellar.
