Being one of the most popular varieties of winter squash, these plants will produce the squash you know and love. Butternut squash has beautiful, dark orange flesh is the perfect blend of sweet and nutty and often found in many fall recipes, from appetizers to desserts. These plants will produce large squash that weigh in at 4 to 5 pounds with small seed cavities.

Plant Preferences:

Protect young plants from pests with floating row covers. Properly cured squash can be stored for several months in a cool, dark pantry or root cellar.

When to Sow:

Sow seeds outdoors after danger of frost has passed, or indoors 3-4 weeks before planting out. Sow two seeds per location and thin to one plant if both germinate.

Harvest:

Harvest squash about 8 weeks after fruit is first set by cutting from the vine. Freshly cut squash are very delicate and require curing by being exposed to the open sun or warm temperatures with good air circulation for about a week.
